Cathedral House, Canterbury
BSF Consulting Engineers Ltd were commissioned by Canterbury Cathedral to inspect and report on an existing three storey building attached to Cathedral House in the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral. The building was vacant and in parts derelict. The intention was to repair and bring the building back into use as an office.
The existing building was thought to date from the Victorian period and was constructed from timber frame clad with masonry walls. The timber frame contained timbers recovered from previous demolished buildings. The building was subject to water penetration in many areas and the timber decayed.
Following the structural appraisal, which identified the areas of the timber frame requiring repair or replacement, a tender was prepared for remedial works. The remedial works included repairs to Kent peg tile roof and ground, first and second floor structures, followed by services installation.
The tender was awarded to Charlier Construction Ltd and was completed in 2022.
BSF Consulting Engineers Ltd were appointed Contract Administrators by Canterbury Cathedral. The building is now in use.
